“Thiru Allikeni Alankara Kolu"





During Navarathri season, it is usual to celebrate the festival in all households in Tamilnadu, with what is called Kolu – an arrangement or display of various kinds of dolls in an artistic way. It is for the first time a grand Kolu of its kind is put up at Sri Parthasarathy Swamy Temple, Triplicane, titled THIRU ALLIKENI ALANKARA KOLU.It is organized and sponsored by SMART CREATIONS. It is conceived, created, designed and executed by “THE MYLAPORE TRIO" i.e. S. Surendranath, S. Aparna, S. Amarnath of Sri Sumukhi Rajasekharan Memorial Foundation, and veterans in the field, whose Houseful fame Thematic Kolu is quite famous. The Kolu is Unique, Novel, Grand & Massive, First of its kind in the history of the Temple. It is aesthetically designed with 7 steps on each side of the four directions (facing North, East, West, South) and the other 4 directions are also displayed with thematic dolls big & small. This pyramid like structure is placed on a Temple Tank like a Neerazhi Mandapam, with a real water effect, filled with artificial Alli flowers & lighted with an array of Agals. Ashta Lakshmis and Ashta Dhik Gajas are placed on 8 directions inside the tank. The Theme of this Kolu is “Sri Vaishnavam" and the dolls are based on Epics, Legends and Stories relevant to it. At the top center, a Golden Vimaanam is placed and the steps are filled with artistically crafted dolls ranging from 3 inches to 4 feet made of clay, wood, paper mache, metal, plaster of paris etc. The Golu begins with the Lord Ganesha in the name of Thumbikkai Azhvar followed by Rukmini Thayar & Venkatakrishna Swamy, Lakshmi Narasimhar, Vishnu Vishvarupam, Vishnu Durgai with Lakshmi & Saraswathi, also the one and only Sri Parthasarathy Utsavar exclusively made for the purpose, Nachiyaar Koil Kalgarudan, Lord Balaji & Thayaar, Lord Vishnu in various forms from different sthalas, sequences from Ramayana (Panruti Dolls) & Krishna Avatar (Calcutta Dolls) etc.



Apart from the Main Kolu, the adjacent mandapam and the space around are also decorated and displayed with Vaishnavam concepts. Ksheera Saagaram or Thirupaarkadal with Lord Vishnu, Lakshmi and Dasavataram, a theme on the “Odam Song - Akilam Ellam" is portrayed connoting the Twelve Alwars crossing the ocean of life by sailing the boat of Bhakthi and reaching Boologa Vaikundam – Srirangam. The other two sides have Lord Rama, Lord Krishna, Lord Vishnu, Andal set in appropriate backdrops specially designed.





According to the Mylapore Trio…this THIRU ALLIKKENI ALANKARA KOLU is a new concept designed and crafted exclusively to suit the temple and theme. The dolls have been meticulously and pains-takingly collected from various shops in Chennai, Panrutti, Kadalur, Calcutta etc. There are also special gold lacquered Temple Mandapam, Lamps, Icons, wall panels, decorative item, etc from Smart Creations to add glitter to the beautiful Kolu. The dolls vary from paper mache, clay, wood, metal, plaster of paris etc. The display also consists of Gold & Silver lacquered items including icons, pooja & decorative items, wall hangings, lamps etc. from Smart Creations. This Kolu would be on display from 8th to 17th October 2010. The Kolu team express their heartfelt thanks to the Temple authorities, priests & other staff for giving them an opportunity for putting up this historic Kolu & for their unstinted support rendered throughout.
